In a five-page resolution released last September 15, the EU expressed concerns regarding the proliferation of the extrajudicial killings of alleged drug offenders and criminals in the country.

The figures of more than 3,000 people killed by both police and vigilantes in President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal war on drugs alarmed the EU.

“Do everything in their power to stop the vigilantes, investigate all extrajudicial killings and prosecute all who have participated in these killing,” the resolution read, believing that the death of suspected drug traffickers and pushers encouraged the mass murders.

The Philippine Congress was also called out to abstain from reintroducing death penalty and from lowering the age of criminal liability.

President Rodrigo Duterte has been advised to “maintain and improve dialogue with leaders of the international organizations.”

EU delegation in the Philippine, along with the 28 European country embassies were directed to immediately raise concerns and recommendations for the Philippine government.

The EU also expressed its condolences to the families of the victims of the September 2 Davao blat, which left 14 dead and 70 injured.

The European Union parliament serves as the European Union’s legislative body with 751 parliamentarians elected by the citizens of the 28-nation bloc.###
